The Matthews Playhouse of the Performing Arts will be the first theatrical organization in the area, in over 20 years to present the stage version of Rodger's and Hammerstein's classic musical: THE KING AND I.

THE KING AND I, based on the book Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon, follows Anna Leonowens, a widowed schoolteacher along with her son Louis to Bangkok, Siam (which would later come to be known as Thailand) in the year 1862. Here she meets the King of Siam and a familiar story of love and tradition unfolds. The score features some of Rodgers and Hammerstein's most memorable tunes including: "I Whistle A Happy Tune", "Hello Young Lovers", "Getting To Know You" "I Have Dreamed" and "Shall We Dance".
THE KING AND I opened on Broadway in 1951, ran for over 1,2000 performances and received four tony awards. The timeless story continues to be performed around the world, and there are four different film versions, and a short-lived television series about the subject matter.

The Matthews Playhouse production features a talented cast of actors that include: Jim Greenwood, Larry Wu, Sarah Henkel, Sam Faulkner, Preston Grover, Annie Carter, Jessica Srymanske and Nolan Dunagan.

THE KING AND I is directed and choreographed by: RON CHISOLM with musical direction by: ELLEN ROBISON. Chisholm and Robison have been collaborating together for twenty years, having worked on over 45 productions at The Opera House Theatre Company, Thalian Hall, Battleship NC, Theatre Charlotte, and CPCC.

THE KING AND I opens June 11, 2010 and runs with various performance dates and times through June 27, 2010. Tickets for this production are $17.00 for adults and $15.00 for students and seniors. Tickets can be purchased online or by contacting the box-office at 704-846-8343.
